ac issues

In North America, 91% of the population lives in a home with some form of air conditioning.

That’s millions of air conditions that run, day and night. When you have such many units being used, AC issues are bound to come up. Don’t let problems that aren’t hard to fix stop you from enjoying your summer or your home.

Here are four common problems with air conditioners and how to solve those problems:

1. The AC Won’t Turn On

An AC not working doesn’t do you any good but might be easier to fix than you think. If your air conditioner won’t turn on, there are a few things you need to check. If your thermostat has batteries, make sure you check to see if they are dead.

Another potential fix is to flip the breaker off and then back on. Sometimes a fuse can trip that will keep the air conditioner off. This is one of the most common AC problems. You’ll know it’s an electrical issue if it stops when the compressor kicks on and won’t turn back on.

2. AC Not Blowing Cold Air

If your air conditioner is not blowing cold air, you need to check your filter. The filter on an air conditioner is what makes sure dirt, grime, and other contaminants don’t reach the unit. You will have to replace the old filter with a new one to fix your AC.

You should also check the outside unit and ensure it isn’t impacted by dirt and debris. If it is, clean the vents, and it should be able to release the heat from the air inside.

3. Air Conditioner Is Leaking Water

If water is leaking outside, there are a couple of reasons it could be happening. Start by changing the filter and searching for a drainpipe on the outside. Often this pipe can get impacted with dirt and debris that will prevent it from draining the condensation off the unit.

If that doesn’t solve it, you may need AC repair, from a professional. You could be low on refrigerant, or the condenser pan may have cracked. Either of those will require the help of a trained and certified professional.

4. Thermostat Not Working

If your thermostat isn’t working, what you do next will depend on what kind of thermostat you have. If it is battery-driven, make sure the batteries are still good. If it is not an issue of batteries, check to ensure the wires connecting it with the power grid are secure.

A lot of thermostats aren’t installed the way they should be. If you’ve just moved in and started having thermostat problems, you should get an HVAC technician out to help you. They can wire the thermostat back in and rest the system, which should fix the problem.
