If you want to save money, you may want to invest in a ductless heat pump.

Heat pumps are estimated to save about 50% of the electrical cost of heating the air in your home. Ductless heat pumps are not only cost-effective and energy-efficient, but they are also relatively easy to install, making them ideal for any home.

Keep reading to learn about the different types of heat pumps and how to choose the best ductless heat pump for your home.

What is a Ductless Heat Pump?

A ductless heat pump is typically a mini-split system that has high energy efficiency and is relatively easy to install.

A ductless heat pump system has two separate units. One is an outdoor unit with a condenser and compressor, and the other is an indoor unit with an evaporator.

The indoor unit is often mounted high on an inside wall to spread conditioned air through a room, and the outdoor unit is placed outside the wall, opposite the indoor unit. They are connected through pipes and electrical cables through a small hole in the wall.

Other Types of Ductless Heat Pumps

While the mini ductless heat pump is the most common, it is far from the only type of ductless heat pump system.

These other heat pumps still take less space than those that require ductwork. While they may not be as efficient as mini-split heat pumps, they may still be worth looking at when searching for the best ductless heat pump for your home.

Window and Through-the-Wall Heat Pumps

Window heat pumps and through-the-wall heat pumps are ideal for small spaces. Both are compact and single-unit but are typically only able to condition the air in one or two rooms.

They are both also easy and quick to install, often only requiring fifteen minutes to do so.

Window heat pumps can be mounted on a window frame, then caulked to make the room as airtight as possible. Through-the-wall units need to be fitted in a hole, so unless you want to fix a gaping hole in your wall, its placement is permanent.

Portable Heat Pumps

Unsurprisingly, portable heat pumps are the easiest to use, install, and transport.

Like window and through-the-wall heat pumps, portable heat pumps are also single units. They can be easily moved to work anywhere in the home that can provide a power supply for it.

There are two main types of portable heat pumps.

The first is single hose heat pumps, which use one hose to drain the air inside your home to the outdoors. Dual hose pumps have a hose that drains indoor air and a hose that draws in outdoor air.

Choosing the Best Ductless Heat Pump

There are a variety of ductless heat pumps to suit the needs of different homes.

When choosing the best ductless heat pump for your home, make sure to keep the number and size of the rooms in mind. While a smaller heat pump may seem easier to install or even transport, these types of heat pumps will not be as efficient at spreading conditioned air in a larger space.
